California's Historic Mission Trail

An approximately eight-hundred-kilometre historical journey linking California's twenty-one Spanish missions from San Diego to Sonoma. It follows the idea of El Camino Real through living Indigenous homelands and a complex colonial history. This is not an official Camino de Santiago and not a continuous pilgrim-ready walking route: safe foot alignments, lodging, water, access, credentials and other services require independent, section-by-section planning.

San Diego on California's Historic Mission Trail
Route preview. The mission anchors are ready to explore as a historical itinerary. Personal walk tracking remains on the Camino Francés until route-specific milestones, stories, traditions, and optional language content are authored for this route.
Historic itinerary, not a pilgrim-ready footpath. The 21 missions are destination anchors, not a verified continuous walking alignment. Modern roads may be unsafe or prohibited for pedestrians, and Camino-style waymarking, albergues, water, credentials, luggage transfer and daily-stage support should not be assumed. Plan each section from current local sources.
A complex history. These places stand within living Indigenous homelands. A responsible journey should include Native accounts of colonization, coerced labor, displacement and survival—not only mission architecture.
